A Great Public Library Deserves Great Public Art

Rabbett Before Horses Strickland is a nationally recognized painter and member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.  His larger than life canvases tell the stories of Ojibwe mythology, often with Nanabozoo, a mythical being who embodies the ways of Ojibwe living, as the central figure.  Glorious vibrant colors, fantastic people, and animals bring viewers boldly into the legends Strickland translates into visual art.  You may recognize European Renaissance influences in Strickland’s style. If you’d like to learn more, Wisconsin Public Television aired a documentary featuring Strickland in 2020.  We are honored to have Birth of a New World on display in the Vaughn Library.  You can view it any time the library is open.
